paper CO_ColombianAppliedLinguisticsJournaltxt177 - : It has long been recognised that ESL students struggle with essay writing in L2 for a few reasons: the marked differences between the registers of written and spoken English (Biber, 1988 ); the high cultural, linguistic and pragmatic demands essays pose on EFL students (Gleason, 1999; Golder & Coirier, 1996); the language-specific tag attached to argumentative writing (Neff-van & Dafouz-Milne, 2008); and the negative washback resulting from writing under exam conditions (Messick, 1996). It could then be assumed that IELTS students are likely to be affected by similar issues when writing essays as part of their exams.
